How to use Make402
------------------
Make a backup copy of your AppleWorks program disk. Never patch originals of any software!
If you got this on TimeOut-Central, or got a disk from Quality Computers or your user group, just boot the disk and select Make402. If you downloaded it, you need to get into Applesoft Basic and type "-MAKE402" to run it.
You'll be prompted to insert your AppleWorks startup disk. If you're modifying AppleWorks on a hard drive, just press Return and enter the pathname to AppleWorks when prompted.
NOTE FOR 5.25" USERS
--------------------
Buy a hard drive or 3.5" drive. But, meanwhile, make sure you copy the MAKE402-modified SEG.AW file from the Startup disk to the Word Processor and Spreadsheet disks. If they are not all the exact same version, problems will plague you.
Things Worth Knowing
--------------------
If you press the Right Arrow immediately after entering an "@" in a Spreadsheet cell, you don't get the correct date. So don't do it.
If you press a number at the Main Menu, the clock display is messed up. Use the arrow keys if you must have a pristine screen.
If you print Data Base rules to the clipboard, the MouseText characters in a Mask will cause problems if you print the report. Change them to something else if you want the report on paper.
Record selection rules are cancelled during copy/move to the clipboard. We tried to fix it, but just made things worse. Maybe later we'll get it figured out.
The Fixes

APLWORKS.SYSTEM (startup)
o The startup screen was changed to 4.02.
o TimeOut can now load multiple 30-application menus.
SEG.PR (printers)
o A bug in the DeskJet driver was fixed which caused a cloverleaf symbol to be printed at the start of lines in the Word Processor. After making this patch, you need to remove the DeskJet drivers, then reinstall the fixed version.
SEG.DC (dictionary copier)
o The dictionary copier now works with 5.25" disks, and also works if you're using a custom dictionary named something other than CUST.DICTIONARY. It also has a new option to copy the DT.SYNONYMS file for TimeOut Thesaurus. Copy the SEG.DC file to your AppleWorks startup disk. If you want the thesaurus option enabled, type "-SET.DC" from Basic. If you use 5.25" disks, your DT.SYNONYMS files must be on a disk named "/THESAURUS."
SEG.SS (Spreadsheet)
o You may now define up to 99 recalcs instead of just 5 with the NT option in the OA-O screen. The automatic recalc at print time and the recalc count are now properly stored with the file.
SEG.WP (Word Processor)
o The error message for "maximum lines" no longer leaves inverse mode active.
SEG.AW (Organizer/Desktop Functions)
o The Main Menu help screen was updated to 4.02. Its Easter Egg was updated to reflect the new Brandt family size.
o Files with lengths exactly divisible by 4096 are now copied properly by the File Activities.
o The user may now leave a Data Base file and change the path using ProDOS directory to pick a subdirectory from a list. This used to destroy the Data Base file because it wasn't being closed. To make room for this patch, the "Select standard settings for AppleWorks" menu item was shorted to "Select standard settings."
o Text files are now loaded into the Word Processor as Unchanged instead of as New files.
SEG.DB (Data Base)
o Record selection rules now displays the date text when the rule is "Date contains."
o Record selection rules are cancelled when OA-I to insert new records is used. Earlier, the screen did not reflect this cancellation.
o Record selection rules did not always work after a new record was inserted. That bug has been crushed.
o With OA-F Find rules active, OA-M did not work properly.
o Formatting rules did not always "take" after a new record was inserted. Now they do.
o When importing a Spreadsheet cell containing "ERROR," MouseText was placed in the Data Base. Now "NA" is entered in the category.
o Locked categories are now respected during record recalculations.
o Files may now import from another file's category which is numbered higher than the category count in the current file.
o Loading a single Data Base file will now show the century correctly. That is, if you changed it to show just the years (2 digits), v4.01 was still showing the century as well (4 digits), unless you loaded more than one file, or entered the Data Base from another file.
SEG.DR (Data Base Reports)
o You may now delete a report after over twenty reports have been defined. Earlier, the highest numbered report was duplicated.
o Selecting the Arrange option on a tables report now works with the cursor on the last category. Earlier, the correct category name was not displayed when the cursor was on the last category.

Changing the "Copy synonyms" setting
------------------------------------
By default, the Seg.DC file is set to copy your dictionary files only to the ramdisk. If you would like the AppleWorks to copy both the dictionaries and the dt.synonyms, start the make 4.0.2 disk and choose "To.Thesaurus autocopy patch" from the menu. Then, follow the prompts and seg.dc will be reset.
